Vinicio Cheli, new honorary member of the AAI, gave a magnificent conference in Madrid.
Last Thursday, April 12, 2018, at RESAD, Real Escuela de Arte Dramático de Madrid, we had the opportunity to listen to the prestigious lighting designer.
Vinicio Cheli is one of the great illuminators of the European stage, he has worked and collaborated in numerous opera productions, with great directors such as Giorgio Strehler, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Luca Ronconi, to name a few.
With an almost full house of illuminators, professionals and students of the RESAD, Vinicio shared his experience working in the beginning with the demanding demands of Strehler, where he had to achieve a composition of the image with needs that were not solved with the technology of the time. To this end, he had to investigate, invent and experiment in order to find plastic answers with other technologies that were not proper to the theatrical ones.
In this way also contributes to the creation of handmade prototypes, to achieve the position, intensity, color temperature, movement, precise angle, necessary. Inventing various types of devices that have changed and transformed the system and way of illuminating the scene, which has evolved until today, and are the luminaires that we usually use.
As well as taking us through part of the history of lighting, particularly in the 80s and 90s in Italy, he shows us its application and aesthetic use in the work. As the light should exalt and contrast the figure to convey the message of the director, as a fundamental part of the work.
Finally, the master Cheli was named honorary member by Juan Gomez Cornejo president AAI and thanking him for his contributions to the industry and the culture of the art of stage lighting.
