José Luis Rodríguez Pérez, born in Madrid on August 21, 1930. He studied electricity and industrial mastery and thanks to his father Francisco Rodriguez Micó, a representative of artists of the time, he began his career in the world of theatrical lighting at the age of 14 at the Albéniz Theater in Madrid. Afterwards, he spent six years at the Teatro de la Zarzuela and went on tour with major dance companies such as Antonio the dancer, Mariemma and Pilar López. In the 60s and 70s José Luis was one of the few illuminators who signed his designs, thus being a pioneer in the recognition of this work. José Luis was founder of the lighting material rental company ‘Luminotecnia Teatral José Luis’. For more than 40 years, it was a company and school for several lighting designers.
In 1974 he created the lighting for one of the first musicals in Spain, ‘Godspell’, together with Manolo Collado. For 30 years he worked as a designer in the main theaters of Madrid, combining his career with the technical direction of lighting for the Spanish Ballet of María Rosa and Raphael, with whom he has traveled around the world. In the 80s his company specialized in opera, concerts and theater festivals, he worked at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao, the Merida Classical Theater Festival, the Villa Summers and in the live performances of Julio Iglesias, Miguel Ríos, Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel. His passion for theater and lighting led him to work with directors such as José Carlos Plaza, Manolo Collado, Gustavo Perez Puig, Nuria Espert, José Tamayo, Gerardo Vera, Angel Gª Montesinos, Angel Gª Moreno, Antonio Guirau, Miguel Narros, lighting productions such as ‘Don Carlos’, ‘Tio Vania’, ‘Eloisa is under an Almendro’, ‘History of a Staircase’, ‘Carmen Carmen’, ‘The House of Bernarda Alba’, ‘The Seagull’, ‘History of a horse’, ‘Good Night Mother’, ‘The Poison of the Theatre’, ‘Macbeth’ by Verdi, ‘Lost in Yonkers’, ‘Petra Regalada’, ‘Rings for a Lady’, ‘Samarkand’, ‘Divine Words’, ‘ Equus’, ‘The Cherry Orchard’, ‘No one pays here’ and ‘Bicycles are for summer’…
