This project is part of the #SaveStageLighting campaign, which has emerged as a result of a destructive law that has been proposed within the EU Energy Directorate’s Eco-design Roadmap.
What does the Eco-design Work Plan entail?
The legislation states that, from September 2020, only lighting instruments that achieve a certain level of energy efficiency will be allowed for sale in the EU. The problems and consequences of this legislation are extreme and could cause a cultural debacle across the continent: it would result in the immediate economic pressure of having to rebuild the infrastructures and lighting stocks of all theatres in Europe.
In any case, even if the centres could afford this change, the efficiency level set is so high that there are currently no products capable of achieving it, nor will there be within the time scale granted. This means that come September 2020, we will see theatres shutting down, as current stocks and supplies are depleted through use. You can find more information about the legislation at www.savestage.lighting.
In response to this, the AML has launched the #SaveStageLighting campaign and now we are planning a very exciting project: LIGHT THE #SaveStageLighting.
What does the project consist of?
The project involves theatres lighting up the outside of their buildings and/or their surroundings with the hashtag #SaveStageLighting. We are asking for participation from venues all over Europe, of all sizes, whether it’s a small pub with 50 seats in a back room, a top-notch centre, or a huge stadium. Our aim is to get our message out to as many people as possible and to show as much cultural opposition as possible to these proposals.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 28th. We ask you to illuminate at night so that it can be seen by as many people as possible. This date is key as there is a public consultation with the EU which ends on 7 May, and we want to give people a chance to respond. The deadline to register your interest and request gobos is Tuesday, April 24.
At no cost to you of any kind, you will receive one or more metal gobos in size A, B or M – whatever you order!
The only thing you have to bring is your light!
How do I get my gobos?
Send an email to robbie.butler@ald.org.uk, with the name and address of your center, explaining the characteristics of the gobo you request and from there, he will see it.
There are three types to choose from: DOWNLIGHT, STRAIGHT ON, or UPLIGHT.
In the meantime, is there anything else I can do?
Yes! If you want to support the campaign even more you can:
– Sign the petition: https://t.co/QPEPmArPKt
– Contact your Member of the European Parliament: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/search.html?country=ES
– Fill in the Public Consultation document to explain to the EU what the impact of this legislation will be on your school.
– Share this document with colleagues from other centres! We want as many theatres as possible from all over Europe to participate in this event!
