On April 23, 2018 was celebrated the International Book and Copyright Day declared by the United Nations General Assembly. UNESCO. On the occasion of this day, the Asociación de artistas Plásticos Escénicos de España (APPEE) and the Association of Lighting Authors (AAI), organized, thanks to the collaboration of the Teatro de La Abadía, the 1st Conference on Copyright in Performing Arts.

Unesco tells us that international days are created to sensitize, raise awareness, draw attention, point out that there is an unresolved problem, an important and pending issue in societies so that, through this awareness, governments and states act and take measures or so that citizens demand it from their representatives.

As creators of the visual arts of the performing arts we know that there is a dark and silent void. That is why we believe that it is essential to know the current situation, the national and European legislation. Explain the importance of protecting intellectual property in the same way that industrial property is protected. Society must understand that if it does not do so, it will be impossible to advance in cultural, social and economic development.

“…To speak of theatre is to speak of a stage experience in the making of which a large number of creators participate: actors, playwrights, set designers, costume designers, lighting designers, sound designers, stage directors… As a stage event, as a mise en scène, theatre is a multi-authorial work. And it is surprising that, of all its creators, only the writer of the text is legally considered the author…”. Cristina Soler Benito – Performing arts and copyright – 2016

“In modern society, the concepts of authorship and creation are fundamental in cultural production. The act of creation is commonly understood as the process by which one or several people, in the exercise of their intellect and emotions, produce a material or immaterial object that transmits values, ideas and knowledge, which contributes – among other aspects – to forge the cultural identity of a community….”.” Subercaseaux, Bernardo. “Nation and Culture in Latin America”. Editorial LOM. 2002.

At this important event, we were fortunate to have experts on the subject such as
Begoña Cendoya
Javier Campillo Reino and
César Iglesias
