Opera in three acts. Libretto by Tchaikovsky based on Pushkin’s play of the same name. Total approximate duration: 3h 50m
SYNOPSIS
The young Hermann, who has his paradise in social advancement and gambling, sacrifices his love for Lisa for his obsession in getting a magic formula, in the power of an old countess, that will allow him to win playing cards. Having caused Lisa’s death, Hermann will die, deceived by the ghost of his victim.
The tragedy of the romantic hero – a very complex protagonist obsessed by his passion for gambling, who is driven by an ineluctable destiny to fall out of love, crime and death – is enhanced by the presence of important dreamlike and phantasmagoric elements.
Gilbert Deflo’s lavish staging transports us to a bygone era that underscores the scathing portrait Tchaikovsky proposes: a vanished generation of Tsarist Russia, hidden under the guise of a gentle depiction of the reign of Catherine the Great. The court, streets and riverbanks of St. Petersburg emerge in a score that intentionally recreates the musical forms of the 18th century, incorporating references to popular and religious music without ever sacrificing the composer’s fervent lyricism. Along with Eugene Onegin, it represents Tchaikovsky’s great contribution to the field of opera.
