On January 10, 2014, the AAI with the support of the Teatro Real and the participation of its sponsors and collaborators, held in the Gayarre Hall of the Teatro Real the 4th Meeting of the series “Encounters with light” with the prestigious lighting designer James Ingalls, on the occasion of his participation in the opera “Tristan and Isolde”.
James Ingalls was born in the United States and studied at the Yale School of Drama and the University of Connecticut.
He has collaborated with Sellars for 33 years on numerous productions, including world premieres of John Adams (Nixon in China, The death of Klinghoffer, El niño, The Gospel according to the other Mary), Kaijaa Saariaho (L’amour de loin, Afriana Mater, La Passion de Simone) and Toni Morrison- Rokia Traore (Desdemona). He has also made illuminations for Mark Morris(Dido and Aeneas, The hard nut, L’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed il Moderato). Recent projects include Bruce Norris’ theatrical works Domesticated (Lincoln Center), Davis Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross with Al Pacino (Bradway), Paul Taylor’s Perpetual dawn as well as Twyla Tharp’s dance performance Waiting at the Station (Pacific North West Ballet). She often collaborates with Melanie Rios Glaser and The Wooden floor dancers of Santa Ana, California. At the Teatro Real she has participated in Iolanta and Persephone, Ainadamar, Mozart Dances and The Indian Queen. In January 2014 he participated in an “Encounter of Light” while illuminating Tristan and Isolde and was made an Honorary Member of the AAI.
