He studied photography in Munich and worked from 1995 to 1998 with Max Keller in the lighting department of the Münchner Kammerspiele. He was assistant in productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Lincoln Center in New York and the Müchner Kammerspiele. In 2000 he began his work as a lighting designer for theatre, opera, installations and performances. He has participated in more than a hundred productions at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Covent Garden in London, the Opéra National de Paris, La Monnaie / De Munt in Brussels, the Metropolitan in New York, the Staatsoper in Berlin, the Dramaten in Stockholm, the Comédie Française in Paris and the festivals of Avignon, Salzburg and Bayreuth. He has worked with Langhoff, Ostermeier, Larsson, Kentridge, Haneke, Wilson and collaborated on art projects by Beecroft, Kiefer, Graham and Abramovic. At the Real he has participated in Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Der Rosenkavalier, La página en blanco, Così fan tutte and La conquista de México.
In January 2015 he was the protagonist of the X Encuentro de la luz on the occasion of his Lighting Design for the world premiere of the Opera “El público” and was named Guest Member of the AAI.
